Strawberries are in season! Go to your farmer's market and have a look. Choose the smaller ones they have not as much water and more nutrients. They keep in the fridge for 2 or 3 days. Strawberries are health food! Go for it! Strawberries – have significant health benefits and have been studied well because of their anti-cancer, anti-microbial, and anti-oxidant activities as well as their ability to regulate blood sugar. But there is more! Medicinal records show that strawberries were used by the Romans and Greek to cure gout and for digestive problems. In the Middle Ages strawberries were cultivated as part of a healthy diet. The leaves were used in medicinal preparations. Due to their high tannin content they were used as diuretic and for constipation. But is was the berries that were proven to help with rheumatic gout. Modern research shows strawberries have an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect in patients with osteoarthritis. The bio-activity in strawberries helps with metabolic syndrome - especially diabetes and high cholesterol. Strawberries are native to Europe and the Americas. Today the US is the world leading producer of strawberries, primarily from California followed by Florida and Oregon.
