Psyllium (plantago ovata)
Psyllium is a low-growing groundcover native to India, growing worldwide. Each plant has up to 15,000 tiny, gel-coated seeds. Psyllium seeds and the husk have a lot of fiber - both soluble and insoluble. Seeds have more soluble fiber (5g per TBSP ground psyllium seeds). In addition seeds are a good source of beta-sitosterol, beta-carotene, riboflavin, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc and other nutrients.
Psyllium can help relieve both constipation and diarrhea. It has also been used to help regulate blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. Research shows that the fiber, and especially the soluble fiber found in psyllium can help lower cholesterol.
How to take psyllium: You can choose to take just the powdered seeds, or the powdered husks or combine both. Begin with a low dose (1/2 tsp daily). Gradually increase to 1 tsp daily. Mix in 8 oz of water, stir completely, and drink right away. Add more liquid to the mixture if it becomes too thick.
DO NOT take this product if you have bowel obstructions or spasms, or if you have difficulty swallowing. Psyllium may decrease the absorption of other medications you may be taking. Take this product at least 2 hours from your other medications.
