Senna (leaves)
(Senna alexandria)
Senna is a small shrub that originates in the upper Nile region of North Africa and was used for medical reasons over 3500 years ago. It has been used as a laxative for thousands of years.
Senna encourages bowel movements by stimulating the smooth muscles that push stool through the intestine. It is widely accepted as a stool softener and a short-term treatment for constipation.
To brew a medicinal tea use ¼ - ½ tsp (0.6-1.5g) of the dried powdered leaves of the herb per cup of boiling water and let it steep for about 10 minutes and strain. Drink at bedtime. Senna usually starts to work in 3 to 9 hours.
Senna leaf is approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) for short-term use in occasional constipation. It is an FDA-approved nonprescription laxative.
Do not use this product if you have abdominal pain or diarrhea. Consult a healthcare provider prior to use if you are pregnant or nursing. Discontinue use in the event of diarrhea or watery stools. Do not exceed recommended dose. Not for long-term use. Excessive doses and long-term use can deplete levels of potassium and other important electrolytes, which can lead to fatal cardiac arrhythmia.
